Porcellio laevis “dairy cow” isopods

This woodlouse belongs to the genus Porcellio. The swift woodlouse is a common name for this isopod. As the species epithet laevis and the vernacular name “swift woodlouse” suggest, the species is capable of quick bursts of speed. With a smooth dorsal surface and a size of up to 20mm, these woodlice are distinguished by their large and distinctive appearance. A male can be identified by its long, spear-shaped uropods. Due to its relatively easy care requirements and the variety of color morphs available, it is commonly kept as a pet. A terrarium can be established within a few weeks following the introduction of the species.

Environment

In damp areas, this species is found under rocks and fallen logs. Besides being found in agricultural areas like gardens, farms, and stables, they can also be found in dung and compost piles, making them excellent cleanup crews.

Feeding

Any organic waste or matter within their enclosure will be cleaned by these arthropods. They are therefore great candidates to clean up after other animals. Their typical diet consists of boiled oak leaves and birch leaves, dead wood, fish food, sepia, cucumber, and mushrooms.

Life Cycle

During the first three weeks of their development, they are eggs, then emerge as adults. Porcellio laevis typically lives for two years, but they mature in two months.
